1960s voted the best hair decade

The Sixties have been crowned the most stylist decade when it comes to hairstyles – according to a new poll.

The survey, conducted by ECigaretteDirect.co.uk, asked 800 people to name which decade of the last 60 years they believe had the most desirable hairstyles.

The decade, famed for styles such as the Twiggy bob and Audrey Hepburn’s beehive, topped the poll with over a third of the vote (34%).

The retro styles of the 1950s like the ‘Marilyn’ and the ‘Pompadour’ – sported by the likes of Elvis and James Dean - came second in the survey with just over a quarter of the vote (26%).

Just under a fifth (19%) believed that the 1990s had the coolest coiffeurs, with nearly all respondents citing Jennifer Aniston’s ‘Rachel’ as the decade’s defining hairdo.

The Seventies, which gave us the Farrah Fawcett ‘flick’ and the glam rock hair style barely made double figures with only 11% naming it as their first choice.

The Naughties polled particularly low on the list, gaining just eight per cent of the vote. Many respondents put its poor score down to the chav hair styles of the crew cut and the ‘Croydon facelift’ which were popular at the time.

In last place however, came the 1980s which scored just two per cent with virtually all respondents naming the mullet, famously sported by Chis Waddle and Glen Hoddle, as the biggest crime against hair fashion.

A spokesperson from Ecigarettedirect.co.uk commented: “Retro and vintage fashion is very popular at the moment so I am not at all surprised that the 1950s and 60s have come out top of the poll. It was a classy decade for hair and there were some really creative styles worn during that time.

“The 1980s definitely marked a low point for hair design. Everything had to be big and brash and there was no finesse whatsoever.

“It is interesting to see though how a celebrity’s hairstyle can dominate the fashion of a decade, the ‘Rachel’ in the 1990s and the ‘Marilyn’ in the 1950s being perfect examples.”

One person who took part in the poll commented: “The hairstyles of the 50s and 60s had an element of class which you don’t see any more. You only have to look at the likes of Cheryl Cole and Lana Del Rey to see that they are copying the big hairstyles of the 1960s as the styles come full circle again.

“I was really surprised that the 1990’s polled so high although you can’t deny the impact Jennifer Aniston had - literally every woman I know had a ‘Rachel’ at some point in the 90s.”
