UK First: Anti-ageing Supplement Extends the Effects of Botox®

Despite the recession and a relatively hefty average price-tag of £250-400 for Botulinum Toxin (Botox®) injections, the popularity of the procedure shows no sign of waning. Fans of the wrinkle-relaxing treatment can rejoice however, with the UK introduction of a US nutritional supplement which enhances the effects of Botox®, meaning they can wait longer between appointments, saving both time and money. In a recent study (Journal of Drugs in Dermatology) over 9 out of 10 patients showed an increase in effect by nearly a third.

For Botox® to be effective, each of its molecules must bind with a molecule of zinc within the human tissues after being injected. Without zinc, the otherwise powerful toxins have little or no effect. If a person has inadequate zinc in their tissues, then the Botox® will have a significantly diminished effect. There are a number of reasons why zinc absorption is inhibited, but the biggest culprits responsible are phytates, found in whole grain breads, whole-wheat products, many cereals, soy, oats, legumes, beans, corn, nuts and rice. ZYTAZE® (www.zytazeonline.co.uk) is specially formulated with a unique combination of organic zinc along with phytase (an enzyme that neutralizes phytates in the digestive tract aiding in the absorption of zinc) to enhance and extend the effectiveness of the wrinkle-relaxing treatment. The recommended dosage is two capsules each day for four days prior to and on the day of receiving Botox® injections.

A completed formal study has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology where results show that in seventy-seven patients, 92% of subjects with zinc 50 mg and phytase experienced an average increase in toxin effect duration of nearly 30%, and 84% of participants reported a subjective increase in toxin effect, whereas no significant increase in duration or effect was reported by patients following supplementation with lactulose placebo or 10 mg of zinc gluconate, which demonstrates that simply taking a zinc supplement will not have the same effect.

Simply supplementing with zinc does not work because the presence of phytates binds the zinc to the food materials in the gut and, therefore, the zinc is not available for absorption. The clinical trial clearly showed that adding zinc on its own did not improve the effect of the botox. It was only when the correct dosage of combined zinc and phytase was used that patients saw the optimal botox effect.

Dr Soparkar, a leading US plastic surgeon based in Houston, Texas, with a PhD in molecular biochemistry and medical degree from the University of Massachusetts is the founder of this breakthrough product. As a referral centre specialist for treating blephrospasms with Botox® he went on to do research into why some treatments worked better than others which led to dietary investigations knowing that the toxin needed zinc to work more effectively.

“Having performed thousands of botulinum toxin treatments since the mid 1980’s, I frequently found a very varied response in my clients which led to my investigations into creating an enhancement product. Zytaze has been successfully launched in the US, I am delighted UK clients now have the opportunity to see the benefits this product can offer”.

Dr Hilary Allan, a renowned expert in the field of cosmetic and medical aesthetics has been practising for over fifteen years and now runs a well established chain of clinics called Woodford Medical Aesthetics. She is one of the foremost female aesthetic medical practitioners and has been named in the top ten cosmetic doctors in the UK. She believes the product is a huge breakthrough in aesthetic treatment.

“I have used Zytaze with some of my regular Botox® clients and have found that they have had an enhanced experience for the duration of the treatment. In addition to this, clients found their Botox® took impact within a couple of days rather than the usual two weeks. My clients are welcoming the introduction of Zytaze to strengthen and prolong the effects of Botox®”.
