What is Your Colour Type?

Cool Tones

For starters, the undertones of your skin determine whether you have a cool or warm complexion. If your undertones have a pink, rosy or bluish colour, your skin tone is likely cool.

Vein colour: When in natural lightening, observe the colour of the veins on the tops of your feet or inner wrists. Do your veins appear blue or green? If they look blue, then you’ve got a cool complexion. Green means warm tones.

Gold or silver: If silver jewellery looks beautiful against your skin tone, then your complexion is cool.

Clothing colours: Do white shirts look great on you? If so, it’s likely you have a cool tone. Cream-based tops typically look best on warmer complexions.
Cool skin tones look great  in blue-based colours and jewel tones, including sapphire, magenta, plum and royal blue.

Foundation: For a fresh, natural look, choose colours that have blue- or pink-based undertones to match your cool complexion.

Eye shadow: To enhance your eyes, select shades in deep, icy blues, silver, gray and emerald green. But pass on colours in the warm brown family, including apricot, coral, cream and bronze.

Cheeks: For a radiant complexion, consider pinks and plums. Avoid auburn and almond shades, which are best for warm skin tones.

Lips: In keeping with your blue-based palette, also choose lip colours with the same undertone. Warm colours
like browns and corals may wash out cool skin tones and even make your teeth look yellow.

How can you tell if a lip colour is blue-based? Hold the lipstick up to a sheet of white paper, which should reveal the tone.

Common colours that complement cool tones include cherry red, raspberry, burgundy, plum, pink and shades of purple.

Warm Tones

The undertones of your skin determine whether you’ve got a warm or cool complexion. Warm undertones — think autumn or spring seasons — contain a yellow-orange combination. Cool undertones resemble winter or summer, so the undertones are slightly blue, pink or gray.

Vein colour: Notice the veins on the tops of your feet or inner wrists. In natural lighting, do your veins appear green or blue? If they seem green, you have a warm complexion. Blue veins indicate a cooler complexion
Gold or silver: Try on a variety of gold and silver jewellery. If gold looks especially stunning against your skin, you’re warm.

Hair check: If your natural hair colour has red, yellow or golden tones, you’re probably warm.
Warmer complexions can be medium to dark. Many people of African, Latino, Asian and European descent have warm complexions.

Warm complexions look most natural in similar shades, so choose colours that match your buttery skin tone.
Foundation that fits: Avoid foundation that has pink undertones. Stick to yellow bases like tan, wheat, honey, cream, beige and amber.

Cheeks and lips: Like foundation, your blush, bronzer and lip colour should also match your skin’s natural hues. Avoid pinks and purples. Instead, lavish your cheeks in red-orange tones like copper, strawberry, peach, mango, cranberry or tawny. For lips, draw on deeper versions of your blush colour and avoid the opaque, frosted tones.

Eyes made easy: Are you going for a natural or striking look? For natural highlights, choose shadows from the same colour family as your skin tone — beige, chocolate, gold, copper, taupe, eggshell, apricot or olive. To add drama, apply a contrasting colour to those natural shadows. Here are some examples:

Breathtaking browns: If your eyes are darker brown, colours like sea green and turquoise can add brightness. Lighter brown eyes shine in plum or lavender. For eye liner and mascara, go basic with brown or black.

Happening hazels: Hazel hues against a pale crimson, pink, coral or mauve background will create contrast. Choose charcoal eye liner and mascara.

Gorgeous greens or blues: The warm skin, cool-eyed combination is already a natural contrast. So to keep your eyes looking bright, match your shadow to your eye colour. Add a highlighter with bright red, orange or gold flecks for the full effect. And apply brown, navy or green mascara and eye line

Neutral Tones

Neutral makeup tones.
One of the hottest trends in makeup right now is the neutral or the nude face. Instead of not wearing makeup at all, a nude or a neutral face and makeup shades are a subtle approach to makeup that highlight your natural features and accent certain areas of your face. Your complexion is enhanced and your natural skin's glow is brought out through the use of neutral makeup shades.
-- Choose colours that are closer to your skin tone. Unless you have pinkish skin, don't use foundation or other makeup that has pink and white in it. Instead, choose a foundation that has the same undertones as your skin.
-- Make sure that you take care of your skin well. Hydrate yourself and have a skin-care regimen. The best accessory that you can have, especially with a neutral or a nude face, is beautiful skin.
--Don't use too much powder. A nude face is all about dewiness, rather than matte.
--Use shimmer. Shimmer products, such as cheek highlighters, will make your face look young and glowing. It will also help you avoid a dull look.
--Neutral shades still have either cool or warm undertones. Choose neutral shades-roses, beiges, and browns-that have the same undertones as your skin. If you have cool skin, then you should choose neutral colours with red and blue undertones. If you have warm skin, then you will want to choose neutral colours with oranger undertones.
Application mistakes and tips
Now that you have the best shades of makeup for neutral tones, here are some tips to help you apply your makeup flawlessly. Here are some of the most common mistakes made when applying makeup, and what you can do to avoid such makeup slip-ups.
1. Using dark lip liner
If you aren't wearing dark lipstick, then you shouldn't be wearing dark lip liner. If you apply dark lip liner, then you will simply have a ring around your lips, which also will accentuate and highlight any fine lines which you have around your mouth.
To avoid this ring around the lip problem, purchase a neutral shade of lip liner pencil that will blend beautifully with all kinds of different shades of lipstick.
2. Using a concealer that is too light for your skin
Why do you use concealer? Do hide areas on your face that are darker than the rest of your face. Concealer is used for under eye circles, blotchy areas on the face, or acne. However, while you are trying to hide dark areas, you might choose a concealer that is lighter than your skin. This lighter colour will actually draw attention to those areas on your face.
To avoid the problem of too-light concealer, choose a concealer that is either the exact same shade as your skin, or is only one slight shade lighter than your skin.
3. Wearing makeup colours that are far too bright
Many people choose to wear bold makeup colours on a regular basis, such as bright oranges, bright pinks, or other day-glo colours. While bright makeup is appropriate for an evening out or another special occasion, they actually make your skin look older and they are incredibly harsh looking.
In order to avoid looking like an aged clown, choose neutral makeup shades and tones. All skin undertones look wonderful with neutral colours. Some perfect neutral shades, as described above, are roses, beiges, and browns. Instead of making you look harsh and garish, neutral shades and a neutral palette will give your skin an attractive glow.
