Shalimar

Guerlain's most successful and enduring fragrance was created by Jacques Guerlain at a time when fascination with the Orient was sweeping Europe. Inspired by the love of an Indian Emperor for his magnificent wife, Mumtaz-Mahal - for whom the Taj Mahal was built - Shalimar is named after "The Gardens of Shalimar," where their love grew.

A deliciously fresh flight becomes hazy and sensual when the vanilla and powdery notes of its sweet, sensual base are discovered.

Notes:

Bergamot, Lemon, Jasmine, Rose, Iris, Incense, Opopanax, Tonka Bean, Vanilla.

Style:

Voluptuous, warm, embracing, sensual, the perfume of temptation.

Shalimar was created by Jacques Guerlain in 1925, as a tribute to the legendary love story between Emperor SHAHJAHAN and his wife Mumtaz Mahal. Before he became emperor his name was Prince Khurram. According to the legend, twenty- year-old Prince Khurram met a young girl, named Arjumand Banu at the bazaar where her family worked. Mesmerized by her beauty, after becoming emperor, he made her his wife as Mumtaz Mahal, meaning the "Jewel of the Palace". After the wedding ,the prince and Mumtaz were inseparable, in war and in peace. She had given 13 children to Shahjahan and died during the birth of their 14th child at the age of 39. Her death devastated Shah Jahan and had built Taj Mahal in memory of his wife and their undying love. Shalimar is named after ‘The Gardens of Shalimar’.It was Mumtaz’s favorite garden. Shalimar is one of the best selling perfumes ever and its magic is undeniable. Perfume is composed of citrus notes; lemon and bergamot, jasmine, may rose, opoponax, Tonka bean, vanilla, iris, Peru balsam and gray amber. Coolness of the citrus notes leads to floral heart ending with a warm and luxurious trail. Here you can watch an advertising video for Shalimar by Guerlain. Shalimar Black Limited Christmas Edition was introduced in 2007 as limited Christmas edition bottle of this classic fragrance. The perfume composition remains the same, available in parfum and eau de parfum concentrations, in a mysterious, black bottle.

SHALIMAR BIRDS OF PARADISE

Shalimar first made its mark in 1925 as the first oriental scent.

The special, limited-edition bottle reflects the epic love story behind the fragrance.Guerlain describes Shalimar as a symbol of the passionate love Emperor Shah Jahan, who built the Taj Mahal, bore for his wife Muntaz Mahal.

They say Shalimar Birds of Paradise is “a sort of invitation to a mirage, in which dreams could take flight into the evening light, rising towards other tales that Shalimar may soon whisper to us in our sleep.”

Jahan presented his wife with Shalimar Gardens, said to be a carpet of flowers with fountains humming and springs flowing through. It is also said that a pair of birds of paradise with magnificent plumage guarded a love potion – Eau de Parfum Shalimar – in these gardens day and night.

The Scent
Shalimar Birds of Paradise is inspired by these guardians and “comes to life with the freshness of flowers, delicately powdered by iris and intoxicated with jasmine and rose, before giving into suave softness of vanilla and the delectability of tonka bean.”

The Bottle
The new bottle's “feminine shoulders appear bathed in glossy moonlight” with a sophisticated silk feather draped around the neck and held in place by a blue satin ribbon. Oiseau de Paradis is inscribed in golden ink with handwriting meant to resemble the creasures that inspired it.

Guerlain introduced two variants of their classic fragrance, Shalimar, produced back in 1952, this spring. These are sensual reinterpretations of the original perfume, decorated with elegant flowers and beautiful applications on the flacons. Dark and light Shalimar, fragrances for day and evening, will be available from spring 2009, as EDT and EDP, with opulent, dominant vanilla accords in both editions.

Shalimar Eau de Parfum encompasses bergamot, jasmine, iris and rose, joining already mentioned vanilla in a base. The fragrances are available in flacons of 75 ml as limited editions for 2009.
